OUR STORY
They were either too thick for warm climates, or made of stuffy and uncomfortable microfibre fabric. We needed something that was light and breathable for our tropical adventures.
So we set out to create a surf poncho we would wear in Sri Lanka or Bali. Something we could easily put on after surf, or just to lounge and chill in.
ABOUT THE NAME
maru machan means "on a walk with a friend" in Sinhala. Because nothing beats paddling out with your best friends :)
Our name and colours are inspired by the nature of this beautiful island, and the beautiful people we've met here.
Each poncho is handmade by a dressmaker in Ahangama, a surf town in the southern coast of Sri Lanka.

We are in love with this powerhouse of a fabric - linen is airy, moisture-wicking and hypoallergenic. It is perfect for warm summers and tropical climates.
Beside its excellent natural properties, we chose linen for its notable sustainability benefits. Compared to other crops like cotton, linen demands fewer resources and significantly less water for cultivation and processing. Moreover, flax, from which linen is derived, thrives without the need for pesticides and chemicals. It is also an incredibly efficient crop, ranking just behind hemp in productivity per hectare.
Linen is naturally biodegradable, which means it contributes less waste and minimises harm to ecosystems when a product reaches the end of its life. Linen is extremely long-wearing, further decreasing waste.

Frequently asked questions
How do I care for my changing poncho?
Machine or hand wash in water up to 40°C. Use the gentle cycle on your washing machine. In both cases, it is preferable to use a mild soap or a liquid detergent.
The great thing about linen is that it naturally gets softer and more supple over time!
How absorbent is the changing poncho?
Linen has excellent absorbency. It can absorb up to 20% of its weight in moisture! It also wicks moisture quickly, leaving your skin feeling fresh and dry,
Where do you ship?
We ship to Sri Lanka and Bali at the moment. Shipping within Sri Lanka is free of charge. For Bali, shipping rates will be calculated at checkout.

All ponchos are handmade, please allow us 3-4 weeks for production and delivery.
Will my poncho shrink?
We pre-wash our fabric before the tailors start making the ponchos. However, shrinking will depend largely on how you choose to care for your poncho.
Avoid washing in hot water. Washing in cold water and drying at low temperature will nearly eliminate shrinking entirely.
